EDWARD DE LACY

Designer and maker of luxury leather bags and accessories.

Q&A

  • I am self taught

  • No, I started off with sculpture and fell into making bags, but I have always been a maker from an early age.

  • 18 years

  • Only really in my packaging. What’s more important to me is making things that last a lifetime or 2 and can be passed through generations, my bags all have a lifetime guarantee. I also offer restoration and repair work on any brand of luxury bag.

  • Art, music, and the material itself. I draw a lot of my inspiration from minimalist art and the leather itself. Each skin is unique, and this will frequently serve as the basis for my creations. I also draw a lot of my inspiration from what I have already made, as I work quite naturally.

  • I would use brighter colours and create more avant-garde pieces - more conceptual I guess - a cross between art and fashion.

  • Mostly yes. I make commission pieces working with individual clients and I produce my own collections - some of which are repeats but mostly in a different leather/ colour. I don't like to repeat myself too much, I like to move forward constantly, always pushing my designs and skills.

  • I am currently working on a capsule collection of bags which are all one-offs and are all made of second-hand leather motorcycle jackets. The collection is called Reconstructed and the first drop can be found on my website.
