NIGHTPEOPLE

Directed by choreographers and creative technologists, Aaron Howell and Daisy Howell, they specialise in combining contemporary dance, cabaret theatre, electronic music and immersive digital technologies. Bringing femme/queer/alternative stories to the forefront of their audience experience, Night People celebrates the need for all to liberate their inner iconic being, holding their love for sassy bass, reality TV drama and pop star icons at the centre of their work.

Q&A

  • We first met back in 2016 in the more set roles of (Aaron) filmmaker/animator and (Daisy) dancer/choreographer. We have since very much blurred them lines into a very fluid world of collaborative play and shared practice/passions. Night People was officially established in 2020 as a home for our party infused antics and platform for the incredible artists we’ve had the pleasure of working with.

  • We’re hugely inspired by music! So that tends to be a common starting point for us. Utilising musicality to generate story, precision and drama is one of our faves. Using improvisation and physical musicality as a base to research character, relationships, audience experience and creative concepts is really the back bone of our creative process. Improvisation is our biggest tool, simply because it is authentic to us as movers and where our practice originated. We find it an empowering and insightful way to shape movement intricately and empathetically to one another and for our audiences.

  • As we just mentioned, musicality and improvisation are big influences in our work! We like to play with the otherworldy and the choreography is very much driven by the dancers/audiences in the space and their relationships to each other. As well as sass, campiness and bad b*tch energy, we also love to tell the more intimate, delicate and caring sides of these worlds of escapism and places where people come together.

  • We rarely follow direct, linear narratives, usually opting for more abstract timelines that enable our stories to evolve and reshape across performances. We utilise the use of ’story’ through the people we work/dance with, creating work that evokes ideas of relationships, history, memory and hopes for the future, inviting our audiences to question their own interpretations and to encourage the removal of strict boundaries for dance performance to exist.

  • It’s all in the name – People!

Both the artists that we collaborate with and the audiences that we share our work with, ultimately we want to celebrate the voices and talents of these artists and bring these creative experiences to people outside of a traditional theatre setting.

  • Aaron – some of my most memorable performances are the ones that weren’t officially booked in the first place. Me and Daisy have had some beaut moments of meeting people on the dancefloor and sharing some groovy hype vibes in the crowd. Seeing people let loose and enjoy moving in a carefree way will always continue to be a thing we aim to recreate and offer within our performances/workshops/events.

Daisy - One of my favourite performances has been our first hype for hire performances back in 2021. It was barebones, wild and brought together quickly - but the performance was driven purely by our determination to get back on stage post pandemic and to showcase our united love for dance.

  • Well…as a personal plug…we’ve got some very exciting upcoming events, workshops and performance projects in the pipeline – so keep eyes peeled for those!

We also have a tendency to stumble into new and unsuspecting ventures and collaborations – so we’re excited for the unknown of what might pop up along the way.

In terms of the general creative world, we have a big commitment to our youth outreach and engagement, so we’re excited to see what new waves of creative play will arise. We’re also keen to see more art/performance in unconventional and unexpected social spaces!
